Any ideas to fix a arm on a technics that just wont stay on the record?

my technics 1210 arm wont stay on the record it just keeps returning straight back to the beginning and scratching across the record, it does stay if i put it right to the end of the record though. any one who can help be officially unvielled as a legend.
