Back in the day I had a friend called Paul who to us, his m8s, was known as struggy and to most of you he was DJ Shake. He made the Top floor decks at sterns probably once a month, twice if he bugged Mensa enough for a spot. It was always a buzz to be travelling up there in Gabs's Alfa Romeo, all squashed in with Struggy's record boxes, (Ideal flat surface for the partaking of illicit substances though. Also there's something to be said for being able to bypass the queue amd head straight in like you are charlie big potatoes when in fact you are just a mate of someone who spins the tunes, but hey the girls notice you. Anyway I digress from my whole intention here which is to tell you what I remeber best about sterns, well, quite simply it was the diversity which was entwined with unity. Those of you who were real sternies will know exactly what I mean. The mixture of different types of dance and different types of people were just about spot on. Don't know why but it all came together and worked well. Tragically like most things in life, when it is special it's special. Still we know it never lasts forever and we make the most of it while we can. I never had a bad night in my numerous nights at that club and for that it will always be in my memories.
And there are two things that are garunteed to stir those memories for me, the first is the song by the STREETS 'Weak Become Hero's', and the second is whenever i visit my sister who lives in Worthing I pass the SOMPTING VILLAGE sign and I hear Struggy's voice 'there's SOMPTING familliar about dis place mon' in the worst jamaican accent there ever was. Which would start Gab's and I off with the hysterics.
