tone arm tricks
HARDWARE Posted by iki on Thursday 31 July 2008, 12:23PM

Well I discovered what the problem is and I'm afraid the news aint good. Your tone arm has been damaged and will probably need replacing. In the meantime you can do something to remedy the problem and continue dj'ing.

if you look on the top of the Gimbal (the frame that holds the Tonearm at the back) there is a screw at the top. What you need to do is to turn that screw ever so slightly. On mine I had to turn in Anti-Clockwise. Turn it a tiny amount and then move the arm out over the turntable in the up position. When you let go if it swings back then move the arm back the rest position and turn the screw a little more. Repeat this process until the arm stops swinging back.

I must point out that you should not turn the screw too much.

Hope that helps.

I have the same problem but am not sure it is one.

The (short story) goes like this: I happily unwrapped my technics sl-1210 mk2 today. It came from an e-bay user that called it "brand new, never used" and sure looks like it.

When I was about to finish assembly (headshell and cartridge and so on) I noticed this weird problem: the arm kept springing back to its resting position, no matter what I did. Needless to say, I acted exactly according to the manual and had previously set tracking weight, antiskating and gimball height according to the suggested procedures and in correct order.

The previous poster mentioned something about a "magnetic force" seemingly pulling the whole arm and this is a spot-on description of the phenomenon.

Here is what I did and it worked like a charm. I loosened the screw at the top of the gimball and then tightened it back. Just to avoid confusion: this is the screw that is in the highest possible position on the whole Technics sl-1210, there's nothing above it but air (or the plastic of the dustcover). As I said - it worked for me, and now I'm listening to Porter Band (their first album: Helicopters). My (uneducated) guess is that you have to be careful not to loosen this screw to the point where something comes apart inside.

@Iki: I'd be curious where you got the info that the tonearm needs replacing? It would seem like an extreme thing to do, as all the possible bits and pieces of this arm and its gimball are available as separate part. I don't doubt th correctness of what you wrote, just curious of the source. If the source is a repair shop, aren't they trying to sell you back your own arm, after doing the screw thing?

Finally, after 2 hours of owning this little tank, I have to say: it simply rocks.

Bad bearing on 1210?

Loosening the screw is the last thing you could do before the arm needs replacement. It doesn't solve the problem correctly, it just fixes it for that moment. There is another bearing under the arm inside your SL-1210. That top screw is just tightening the arm to the holder from the top. If the bearing at the bottom is broken there is no chance to fix it without replacing the whole arm. If the top screw on the arm is too loose the arm will be vibrating a lot and you will hear it on loud sound systems. It helps sometimes hoovering out the dust from the center of arm. It helped me for now with the problem I have in my gramophone but anti-skating is not working properly yet. I will try to open it one day and clean the bearing inside. Unless the bearing balls are worn out, otherwise it would help.
