1210's pitchslider, faulty or just me?
HARDWARE Posted by Alex on Thursday 09 March 2006, 07:35PM

Finding it very difficult to get tunes beatmatched exactly but is this me being unrealistic, bad at beatmatching, or are they faulty?

I recently upgraded my turntables from Gemini XL-300 to Technics 1210mk2. My main issue with the geminis is the pitch slider was too short for it's range (+/- 10%) making it very hard to beat match precisely for a long period of time, and the motor was a weak. I'm chuffed with my new decks as you can imagine but I got a problem but it might just be my skills? (the decks are brand new by the way). I can beatmatch quicker and better but am having a lot of difficulty getting them to exactly the same speed, they also begin to go out after 20-30 seconds, even if very slightly. I mix quite fast music, acid techno, and have had more luck with slower tunes for keeping the "sweet spot" where the kick drums are perfectly together. Obviously higher bpm means they go out quicker (I think?). But the BPM I play is around 130-140, nothing ridiculous!

So what I want to ask is am I asking too much to be able to get them exact, is it just me (I find myself tweaking the slider the slightest amount in an attempt to get them to stay but always seems to be slightly too fast or slightly too slow, never just right). Is this normal, or is it just me expecting too much or being rubbish? I haven't been DJing that long but I know what I'm doing kinda thing. I don't mind having to make little adjustments but it'd be neater if I didn't have to obviously. Thanks.

Get used to adjusting the tempo!

Hi Alex,

Well, it's unlikely there's a problem with the faders if the decks are new, particularly if they're technics.

Sadly, you just need to get used to adjusting, to a point where you spot things going out before anyone else does and then get the deft touch required to nudge it back in time without anyone noticing.

That said, even if your decks are to blame, get used to it. If you're playing out in clubs, it's likely to be on 1210's that have had the shit kicked out of them: wobbly tone arms, dodgy pitch faders, the works. Just make sure you take your own carts or you'll quickly trash all your tunes!

Me? I'm bailing out and going digital. Enough clubs have CDJs now that it's the way to go...

cheers and good luck!

Chris
