2 Many DJ's?
PEOPLE Posted by Chris Withers on Wednesday 18 September 2002, 09:08AM

There certainly were! Soulwax blew it big time at Reading this year.

Picture the scene: It's Friday night at Reading 2002, Feeder have just finished a very moving set on the Evening Session Stage, their first back after the tragic events surrounding their late drummer, Jon Lee. The bulk of the crowd is off to see The Strokes on the main stage but those of us in the know are sticking around for Soulwax's "2 Many DJ's" show, having been tempted by a superb album and several great radio sets.

We await the wonder of mountains of bootlegs and scores of rare acappellas being expertly laid over funky instrumentals, interspersed with tasty beats, breaks and samples.

It wasn't to be.

Now, maybe they had technical problems, maybe someone stole their records, or maybe they were just fucked out of their minds. The fact still remains that it was a pretty poor DJ set from the Belgian duo who'd promised so much.

The mixes weren't always in time, there seemed to be an obsession with cutting the bass during crucial builds and drops and the tune selection, to be fair, wasn't what it should have been. No wonder the crowd that had stuck it out found better places to go, Aphex Twin in my case...

I'm really hoping this was due to techy problems. Maybe one of the Soulwax guys, or someone who knows them, could comment?

I stuck it out for longer and the mixing did get better - but not much. It seemed like one of them could mix but the other one couldn't, or maybe it was due to intoxication of some kind or other. I've seen a load of top notch DJs perform badly due to having that drag too many or that extra sniff or deciding to finish off the 6-pack before heading out on stage. Or is it due to the overkill factor of us being cynical as we both DJ and have done so for so long?

Anyway I would want to see them again (preferably in a club environment) before I would wish to judge them fully - perhaps it was just a bad day? We all get them so why shouldn't they.

All good points and totally agree about seeing them again in a club environment.

I guess we'll just have to look out for their next gigs at http://www.soulwax.co.uk and http://www.2manydjs.org.

I saw them on Pukkelpop 2003 in Kiewit (Hasselt) They were great. I don't think the room could handle any more people! The room was so full! And everyone was doing along and dancing! I loved it!

2 Many DJ's @ Ocean, Hackney
by Metro on Friday 02 January 2004 @01:59AM
I saw them last night (New Year's Eve) at Ocean in Hackney -- their mixing was superb. The room was off-the hook! The venue holds 2000, and most of the were either on the dance floor in the main room, or trying to get onto it!
If I hadn't already bought the CD of "As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt 2" on a mate's recommendation I would have been gobsmacked by the track mixing -- as it was, even knowing what to expect -- just AWESOME. These boys even spun a supremely cool version of Beyonce's uh-oh song - sadly i have no idea what other track(s) they were mixing it up with.
