Surely one of the unsung heros of Reading 2002's dance stage on Sunday, the man deserves some serious credit...
Now, I have to start by saying that I'm no longer sure that this guy actually goes under the name of DJ Maley. All I know is that he performed one of the sets of the festival for me.
Imagine a dance tent slowly fading in the warmth of a sunny Sunday afternoon, the previous act having since departed and an energetic guy with a huge grin on his face taking to the decks armed with a box full of records and some ornamental headphones.
He then proceeds to faultlessly cut and scratch his way through a funk filled half hour hitting everything from old skool classics to the freshest of the fresh. Tricks abound and the audience cheers and stares, many fearing for the life of the crossfader and wondering why he bothers with the headphones if he's not going to use them.
I was in awe! I have never seen any DJ who knows their records so well and who is so obviously enjoying showing off to a thoroughly appreciative crowd. Give the man a medal, but who is he?
If you were there and know anyone going by the name of DJ Maley who cuts'n'scratches the competition into oblivion and matches the man in the picture, please let me know!
Big thanks to James Sinclair for the picture, the brave man actually took a camera into the dance tent!
